Ticky Tacky
Ticky Tacky was written in response to recent research suggesting that Gen Z feels nostalgia for the pre-digital age, a time they did not live through. We live in charged, challenging times, often oppressed and sedated by the technology that so many institutions have deemed “necessary” for our daily lives. Ticky Tacky is an expression of missing something that no longer exists, and maybe never existed for you to have experienced it.
Ticky Tacky was premiered at the 2026 Mid-Atlantic College Music Society Conference, and won the conference award for "Outstanding Composition"
Performed by Solymar Castellon, flute, Diron Holloway, clarinet, Sage Wright Haskins, violin, Christopher Chorney, cello, Miles Massicotte, piano, Theo Dennis, percussion, Naima Burrs, conductor.
Recency Effect
Recency Effect was written for Jeremy Kienbaum and Baron Fenwick as a part of the Soundbox Ventures 2026 Composer Fellowship.
Recency Effect is based on a cognitive bias that favors preserving details of events experienced most recently. Musically, that concept is illustrated by an opening passage that depicts something vibrant and beautiful, but most importantly, out of the ordinary. This opening is at odds with following passages that illustrate tedius and unwavering routines. Ultimately, the opening is re-remembered over and over again, changing slightly in each variation, until it blends with routine by the end of the piece, both themes changed by one another.
